  • General Questions
    • What is the difference between a mural and a painting?  A mural is a 2-dimensional picture or design painted directly to a wall.  Murals are usually largescale, but sizes can varie.  A painting is a 2-dimensional picture or design painted on a moveable surface like a canvas, masonite or wood board, etc.  Paintings tend to be smaller than murals and are portable.
    • How large an area can be painted? For both murals and paintings, sizes can vary greatly; although size is usually more limited with a painting.  For extremely large mural projects, an artist must take into account the feasibility of using ladders and scaffolding.
    • How long does a mural or painting take? Time to paint a mural depends on size and amount of detail in the design.  One must also take into account travel time and time for researching and gathering the proper materials.  An average mural takes 3 - 6 weeks.  Paintings tend to be more detailed than murals and can take up to months for completion.  Paintings also often require the construction of a canvas stretcher frame as well as a finishing frame.
    • What types of designs are available?  For both murals and paintings, the sky is the limit.  For kids rooms, there are popular themes like castles, farms, gardens, marine and space.  For more formal residential areas, there are ideas like Italian landscapes, nature themes, ornamental accents and trompe l'oeil (images painted to look as if they are real).  For outdoor murals, people like to reveal social and political ideas, advertisements and images to beautify an environment or provoke thought.
    • Do you use a projector?  We do not use projectors at Southview Mural Company.  While there is nothing wrong with using one, our artists are trained traditionally which involves painting from site.  In our oppinion, this gives paintings more life and a human feel.  For very large projects, we will sometimes use the Gridding Method.
    • How do you charge for a mural or painting?  Murals and paintings are all viewed as custom projects.  An estimated time will be given upon agreement for a design and an hourly rate will be assigned to this estimation along with travel and material charges.  All of this will be laid out clearly before a project is begun.
