What Are Dreams Really For?
11/18/08

"Awake" life can be so crazy.  I find myself so often wanting to find an escape from it all when I'm going through the motions of my day.  You would think that sleep might be an escape from all the insanity.  But, it is so interesting to me that when I sleep, the places I escape to are never very calming or relaxing.  I love to dream.  But, my dreams usually take me places just as or even far more hectic and bizarre than my "awake" life.  How are our minds actually ever really resting?

I'm lucky because I rarely have nightmares.  I love the adventures I take in my dreams.  My husband rarely remembers his dreams, but I usually do.  I've often, over the years, made note of my dreams and used certain imagery or themes in my paintings.  When I was in college, I had a dream about having a pet duck at the beach.  He had red and white striped legs like a candy cane and would fetch a tennis ball up and down the beach.  I used that goofy duck for a long time in my drawings and paintings.  I wanted so badly to figure out what he meant.

People often say that our dreams are to help us resolve certain problems in our "awake" life.  I believe that in a way.  But, I also think that dreams present opportunities that won't ever be lived out in our "awake" lives.  I, most likely, will never have a tennis ball-fetching pet duck with red and white striped legs.
